Abstract

The increasing dependence on digital technologies in higher education institutions has raised significant concerns regarding cybersecurity threats and data protection. Universities and colleges manage vast amounts of sensitive information, making them attractive targets for cyberattacks such as phishing, ransomware, and data breaches. This study presents a literature-based review of cybersecurity awareness in higher education by examining existing research, concepts, and strategies discussed in academic sources. Using a qualitative literature review approach, this study analyzes scholarly articles, books, and reputable publications related to cybersecurity practices and awareness programs within academic environments. The findings highlight that human factors, particularly lack of awareness and insufficient training, are among the primary causes of cybersecurity incidents in higher education. Additionally, institutional policies, continuous education, and the integration of cybersecurity culture into academic systems are essential to mitigate risks. This study provides a conceptual understanding of how cybersecurity awareness can be strengthened in higher education and offers a theoretical foundation for future empirical studies and institutional strategies.
