Digital Learning Environments and Student Engagement: A Review of Literature
Abstract
Digital learning environments have become increasingly prevalent in higher education, reshaping how students interact with learning materials, instructors, and peers. Platforms such as learning management systems, virtual classrooms, and collaborative digital tools play a significant role in influencing student engagement and learning experiences. This study presents a literature review on digital learning environments and student engagement by synthesizing theoretical perspectives and empirical findings from existing academic studies. The research adopts a qualitative literature review approach, analyzing scholarly journals, books, and reputable publications related to digital learning and student engagement. The review highlights that well-designed digital learning environments can enhance cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement among students. However, challenges such as limited interaction, technological barriers, and varying levels of digital literacy may hinder effective engagement. This study provides a theoretical overview that can inform educators and institutions in designing and implementing effective digital learning environments and serves as a foundation for future research in this area.
